Discovering Santiago de Chile’s Centerpiece Attractions

As we said in our previous post, the center of Santiago de Chile would be the historic center of the city since there are the first buildings that were built with the arrival of the Spanish and that to this day maintain their structures or so Fewer have restored them respecting their façade.

It is normal in Santiago to see several buildings with an old façade and modern buildings inside. Many of them were destroyed, mostly by fires or earthquakes, and in order not to lose their history, their façade is respected.

Free walking tour in Santiago de Chile

If you have time, it is interesting to take a free walking tour that starts from the main square, more precisely in the cathedral and that works like all these types of guided tours, using the tips that each one considers necessary. There are 2 times every day, at 10 am and 3 pm, you will find the guides with red t-shirts that say free tour. The tour lasts approximately 4 hours and will take you through the main points of the center of Santiago de Chile where you will also learn part of the history that made and makes Santiago.

We decided to do this tour to get our bearings and also to hear the history of each place and then be able to tour it on our own more calmly, taking photos and spending more time in the places that we liked the most.

To know all these points, at least a full day is needed, starting very early in the morning, unless you only do the guided tour, but keep in mind that with the tour you do not enter any place or climb any hill, only mention is made of them. They show them to them and nothing more, as we said before, each one then chooses what they prefer to know.

Tourist places to visit in Santiago de Chile

The points that we are going to mention does not mean that they are all in the center of Santiago de Chile, but as we said in our previous post, it is like dividing it with the modern part of Santiago, but keep in mind that everything can be done easily on foot. that there is not much distance between point and point.

If you are interested in staying near all these points in the center of Santiago de Chile, here we leave you our previous post Accommodation in Santiago and how to get around

We did the tour in the following order

Main Square

In our understanding, the heart of Santiago de Chile, the typical central square where we find the Central Post Office, Metropolitan Cathedral, Cabildo, National Historical Museum and other historical and classic buildings that make up the origin of the city.

The city was founded by Pedro de Valdivia, whose statue we will also find, on February 12, 1541 and the square was laid out by the builder Pedro de Gamboa following, as we mentioned before, the construction of the most important symbols in said square.

We will not only find buildings but also street artists who liven up the square even more and give it the color necessary to fully enjoy it. An interesting fact is that the square has Wi-Fi so from there if you are a little lost you can find your way by searching the internet, although it is easier to go to the tourist office which is located right there and they will provide you with maps and all the information. that they require.

If you are not going to take the guided tour, we recommend reading some history beforehand since these places hold a lot of it and it is totally interesting to know where you are standing and what really happened in each place.

We cannot do it in this post either since it would be quite long and perhaps boring to some, everyone knows their interests.

Museums in Santiago de Chile

In the center of Santiago de Chile we can find an infinite number of museums and cultural centers. Among them, the National Museum of Fine Arts stands out with more than 5,000 works, the Museum of Contemporary Art, the Museum of Memory and Human Rights, among others. For a matter of time, we prefer to visit other places but we have been told that they are very worth it since they keep works or objects of great value and history. Most of them have long hours and free entry.

Just a few meters from the main square we can visit the first of them, which is the Museum of Pre-Columbian Art and following a few more steps we will find the old congress and in front of it the Supreme Court, both beautiful buildings that call the attention for its architecture.

Moneda Palace

Without a doubt, it is the most important building in Santiago and the one we liked the most in the Center of Santiago, Chile.

It is the headquarters of the Executive Branch and one of the most representative symbols of the country’s political history. As its name indicates, it was born as the headquarters of the Royal Mint for their minting and in 1846 it was decided to move the Government House to this building.

It is also worth visiting not only for its architecture but because one of the most important events in the history of Chile took place here, the bombing that took place in 1973 by Augusto Pinochet to overthrow the Allende government. Today the morande 80 gate from which the remains of Salvador Allende were removed remains of this, and it is closed.

It was declared a National Monument in 1951 and visits to its interior are allowed if you register in advance. Here we leave you the link

Changing of the guard at the Palacio de la Moneda

You can’t miss the changing of the guard that takes place at 10 a.m. on weekdays and at 11 a.m. on weekends. Depending on the month, the change is made on even or odd days. I advise you to go half an hour early to get a place in front of the main door, in any case the show is visible from all sides. It lasts approximately half an hour but you can leave at any time since it takes place right there in the square where the building is located.

2 blocks from here you can find a street called New York, which is only a few meters long but is where the Stock Exchange and the first skyscraper in Santiago are located. A very pretty little street to photograph because of its buildings and cobblestones.

In our next post for the remaining points
